MBA for managers?

Well, this is indeed a very controversial topic - The questions will be viewed in two different ways by the two kinds of people who will read this post: Do employees of a company need an MBA degree to become a manager? Or some may read the question in the title as: Does this manager have an MBA degree?

The folks who would interpret this like the first question, believe that the way up the career ladder is by becoming the manager and companies that promote distance learning cash in off such people. Such people when take a sneak peak into the board room see great managers and assume they all are MBAs and therefore assume that the only way in there is through the doors of any management school. The MBA distance education program is thriving because many people subscribe to this point of view and yearn for an MBA degree to get ahead in their careers.

The second option is practical - to gain real time education from experience (and that is why it is common!). Managers who reach there after putting in a few years, learning people skills, project management, networking, how to deal with bosses with politically correct statements and learn to be in the right place at the right time. There are courses like the Executive general management program that will educate the manager the parts that has been missed in the years put on the job.

The perennial question is still not answered - are managers made or born? Well, has anyone heard of the technical career path?
